Department of Biotechnology

Department of Biotechnology

The core competence of the Department exists in genomics and proteomics; molecular genetics of human diseases; cell & tissue culture; nutraceutical food and beverages; handling of labile fermentation based compounds; efficiency in downstream processing methods; competence in DNA technology; development of diagnostics, drugs, etc.; molecular marker assisted breeding of plants and animals and infrastructure in fabricating bio-reactors and processing equipment. Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or clinical laboratory science helps diagnose, treat and prevent disease through clinical laboratory tests. It is complementary to medical science. It involves analysis of body matter such as fluid, tissue, and blood. It also covers micro-organism screening, chemical analyses, and cell count. These professionals, medical lab technicians and technologists, play an important role in collecting information, sampling, testing, reporting and documenting medical investigations. With their dedicated skills, lab technicians are constantly in demand in hospitals, specialty hospitals, laboratories etc. You could grow to become: Laboratory Manager/Consultant/supervisor, Hospital Outreach coordination . Medical technicians are also required in industry like pharmaceutical for position in product development, promotion, sales, quality promise, environmental health and insurance, amongst others. The students of Biotechnology and MLT have scope of placement at R&D centres of Beckman Coulter, Perkin Elmer, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Mettlar Toledo, Millipore, Imperial Life Sciences, Roche, BioRad, Paul Life Sciences, Nicholas Health Care, Monsanto, ProAgro, Ankur Drugs, United Biotech, Ind Swift, Panacea Biotech and Hatch Biotech. Central organizations include; CSIO (Chandigarh), IMTECH (Chandigarh), IIITM (Jammu), IHBT (Palampur) and PGIMER (Chandigarh) & various Diagnostic Centres and Hospitals.
